Common Mistakes When Importing Cosmetics

Importing cosmetics can be profitable, but many buyers make the same mistakes at the beginning. For clinics and professional skincare distributors, these mistakes can lead to customs delays, compliance problems, weak sales, and damaged reputation.

The first mistake is choosing products only because they are viral. A product may be popular on social media but not suitable for clinic retail, professional use, or the target country’s regulations. Professional buyers should check formula, documentation, claims, shelf life, packaging, and supply stability.

The second mistake is ignoring regulatory requirements. Every market has its own rules. In the EU, cosmetic products require CPNP notification after compliance steps are completed. In Great Britain, products must be notified through SCPN, and every cosmetic product placed on the GB market must have a Responsible Person. In the United States, MoCRA introduced facility registration and product listing requirements for many cosmetic companies.

The third mistake is using risky claims. Words like ā€œtreats acne,ā€ ā€œheals wounds,ā€ ā€œrepairs disease,ā€ or ā€œmedical-grade resultā€ may create legal issues depending on the country. For clinic skincare, it is better to use careful wording such as ā€œsupports skin barrier,ā€ ā€œhelps improve the appearance of skin,ā€ ā€œsoothing care,ā€ or ā€œpost-treatment skincare support.ā€

The fourth mistake is not checking documents before payment. A buyer should request key documents before the first order, especially if the product will be distributed, used in clinics, or sold internationally.

The fifth mistake is unclear pricing and logistics. Importers should clarify MOQ, lead time, payment terms, Incoterms, shipping method, shelf life at dispatch, and responsibility for damaged goods.

The best way to avoid mistakes is to treat importing as a professional system, not a quick product purchase. Strong suppliers, proper documents, clear claims, and market-specific compliance are the foundation of a sustainable cosmetics import business.
